Realized I was checking my emergency kit wrong for years

I always just looked at the expiration dates on the food and water but never actually unpacked the whole thing. Last month during a storm drill in Tampa I found my flashlight batteries had corroded and my first aid kit was missing half the supplies. How often do you guys actually go through your gear item by item?

Honestly that sounds like overkill to me... unpacking everything just makes a mess. If the dates on the food are good, the rest is probably fine. Batteries last for years and a first aid kit isn't something that just disappears. You're just creating extra work for yourself checking every single item.

Wait, you think batteries last for years in a kit? Mine leaked and ruined a flashlight after maybe eighteen months sitting in the garage (it got hot in there, I guess). That sticky mess was not fine.
