Just realized my neighbor's weird antenna setup was a whole other thing

I was getting coffee at the gas station yesterday and overheard two guys talking about HAM radio frequencies and something about 'emergency nets' they run on certain bands. At first I thought it was just hobby stuff, but then one guy mentioned he can reach people in 3 different states without the internet or cell towers. It hit me that my neighbor has this massive antenna on his roof that I always thought was for TV, but now I'm wondering if it's part of something bigger. I've noticed he has a lot of packages coming in with no return labels, and he's always on his porch at weird hours messing with radios. Has anyone else looked into whether these local radio groups could be prepping for something or just really into the tech side of things?

Read a news article last month about HAM operators being used during hurricane relief when cell towers went down. Said those guys can relay messages through multiple people to get information out even when everything else is dead. Not saying your neighbor is up to something shady, but those antennas aren't cheap and the late night stuff is pretty standard for catching certain bands at the right time. The no label packages are weird though, that part stands out from regular hobby gear shipments.

Dude, that's wild you mention the no label packages. I saw the same thing at my neighbor's place last month, he had a box from some electronics distributor in Ohio and another one that was just plain brown with tape all over it. He's out there at 2am with a headset on, totally tuning out the world. I'm starting to think this is way bigger than just a hobby, like these guys are running their own little network.
