I finally cracked a doorbell transformer mystery that ate 3 weekends
Turns out the prior owner had wired a 16V doorbell into a 24V HVAC circuit, so every chime would buzz for 10 seconds then die. Took me 4 different multimeter checks and a $9 voltage tester to spot it, has anyone else dealt with hidden crossover wiring like that?

Checked mine after reading this and found the same kind of mess, but mine was reversed. The doorbell transformer was tapped off the furnace circuit so the chime would hum even when the AC kicked on. What helped was tracing which breaker killed the transformer, because if it dies with the HVAC breaker instead of its own, you know right away it grabbed power from the wrong run. I also started writing the voltage on the transformer case with a sharpie, saves the next guy a headache.
