The weirdest shift I've seen in this community over the last 6 years

Back in 2018 everybody was arguing about Halo vs Uncharted, but now it seems like we all just quietly agree that indie games like Hollow Knight and Stardew Valley are the real common ground, and I wonder if that's because the big exclusives just got too expensive to gatekeep about.

Fable 2 is still my favorite game ever, but dylan_green58 is spot on about indie games changing the whole conversation. The thing is, this shift isn't just in gaming. I see the same thing happening at the grocery store. People used to buy the name brand stuff no matter what, but now everyone's grabbing the store brand or local jam because they know it's just as good and costs half the price. Big companies spent years convincing us you need a huge budget to make something quality, but indie games and small brands proved that's a lie. It's like we all figured out that the expensive stuff was mostly marketing hype. Now we're just looking for what actually works, not what's the biggest name in the room.

Two million copies sold for Stardew Valley in its first year alone. That changes things. Indie games getting big numbers like that puts them in a different category than they were in 2018. People can still argue about Halo vs Uncharted on the side. The real shift is that indie games proved they could compete on quality and sales without needing a $200 million budget or a console war behind them.
