Spent 6 months using the wrong controller mapping in Dark Souls
I played through half of Dark Souls 3 thinking hitting B to dodge was standard. My friend watched me play and asked why I kept fat-rolling into walls. Turns out I had my Xbox controller set to some weird custom layout from a racing game. Has anyone else played through a whole game with the wrong controls before noticing?

Man, that's rough! I had a buddy who played through all of Sekiro thinking he had to hold the block button to deflect. He kept getting wrecked by Genichiro and just assumed the game was that hard. Turns out he never realized you had to tap it right when the attack lands. He was literally blocking everything instead of parrying. I still give him crap about it whenever we talk about FromSoft games.

Have you ever considered that the problem might not just be button mapping, but how differently the games feel from one controller to another? I had a similar issue with Cuphead - played through three worlds using an old Xbox One controller that had a slightly sticky trigger button. I thought the game was just brutally unfair with its timing. Then I swapped controllers and suddenly parrying became way easier. Makes me wonder how many "impossible" games we struggle with are actually just bad controller problems in disguise.
