My brother in law said something about crossplay last week that made me delete my console war drafts
We were at a BBQ in Spokane and he mentioned his kid plays Minecraft with friends on 3 different systems and none of them care what box is under the TV. So I stopped arguing about it and just started asking what games people are actually playing this month, so what's everyone into right now?
Crossplay sounds nice until you actually try it and realize half the reason people picked their system was the exclusive games, the controller feel, or the friends already on that platform. Kids not caring what box is under the TV just means kids don't care, they also don't care if their shoes match or if they ate lunch, that's not an argument for anything. The console war stuff is dumb, sure, but the reasons people pick sides go way deeper than just wanting to play with buddies. If everything plays together and every game is everywhere, then what's the point of the hardware makers even trying to make better machines? You'd get lazy boxes and lazy games and nobody pushing anything forward. Asking what people are playing this month is fine but it kind of skips over the real question, which is what's actually worth playing and why, not just what everybody happens to be doing.
