I thought motion controls were a gimmick until my nephew beat me at Wii Sports bowling 3 games straight
Last weekend I went to my sister's place in Reno and my 9 year old nephew begged me to play Wii Sports bowling with him. I rolled my eyes because I always figured motion controls were just a cheap trick that real gamers outgrow. He beat me 187 to 132 in game one, then 156 to 141, then 201 to 130 in game three. The thing that got me was watching him lean into every throw with his whole body like he was actually on a lane, and I caught myself doing the same thing by the last frame. I have been a controller and keyboard guy for 20 years and never thought a waggle stick could pull me in like that. Now I am wondering if I wrote off a bunch of games just because of the control scheme. Anyone got a motion control game that actually surprised them?
That lean thing you noticed is the whole point and most people miss it. Your nephew wasn't just pressing buttons, his body was part of the game, and once your brain makes that link you stop caring about the waggle. Same thing hit me with Metroid Prime 3 on the Wii, the pointer aiming felt closer to using a mouse than any twin stick setup ever did. The control scheme stopped being a gimmick the second it made me better at the game instead of just different.
