Warning: my old way of mixing small batches was a joke

I used to eyeball water in a bucket with a stick, like a caveman, and it was always a gamble. After a patio job in Tempe last summer where my mix set up way too fast in the heat, I finally bought a 1-gallon drill mixer. Now I measure everything and mix for a full 60 seconds, no mess. Anyone else have a tool that saved them from their own dumb habits?

Honestly, I still eyeball most small batches and it works fine for me. The key is just knowing your materials. That Tempe heat is its own beast, so yeah, a mixer makes sense there. But for a simple repair or a few stepping stones in milder weather, my bucket and a sturdy stick have never let me down. Overthinking it can slow you down more than a bad mix.

But is eyeballing it really knowing your materials, or just getting lucky? Sounds like a good way to waste a bag of cement.

So @thead44, what's your actual failure rate?
