That crew over in Maple Grove finally got their bull float trick to work for me

We poured a 2,400 square foot pad last week out near Maple Grove and I tried the old trick of tilting the bull float just a hair on the second pass. I've seen those guys do it for years but always figured it was just their style. Turns out it pulls the bleed water way better if you keep the front edge up about a quarter inch. The finish came out like glass after the power trowel. What's your go to move for getting a slick surface without overworking it?

Man, that quarter inch tilt is the whole secret right there! I started doing that a couple summers ago after watching a guy from Dubuque work a slab and I couldn't believe the difference. The bleed water just rolls off instead of pooling up and making those weird soft spots. I still get nervous on the second pass though, gotta keep that front edge steady or you'll dig a little rut that shows up after the trowel. But once you get the hang of it, yeah, that glass finish is almost too easy...
