Shoutout to the guy who told me to try a 3/4 inch trowel on a garage floor in Spokane last month.

I did it on a 30x40 slab and the finish came out way too open and porous, which taught me that tool choice really depends on the mix and the weather, not just the size of the pour. Anyone have a better method for a tight finish on a big slab like that?

Tell that guy his advice cost you a bag of mix and a sore back. Classic case of someone talking like an expert from a keyboard. Gotta love the internet.

Yeah, people forget the base slab condition matters too. If that old garage floor was super dry or dusty, it sucked the water right out of your mix before you could close it up. Next time, try a heavy spray of water right before you place, it buys you a little more working time for a tighter finish.
