Rant: My foreman insisted we pour that Phoenix patio in 95-degree heat

He said the mix would be fine if we just added a gallon of water per yard to keep it workable. The slab cracked in three places before we even finished the broom finish. What's your go-to method for a hot weather pour?

Adding water to the mix in that heat is a sure way to get cracks. The extra water weakens the concrete and makes it shrink more as it dries. My crew always uses sunshades and keeps a water sprayer ready for the subgrade and forms, not the mix itself. If it's too hot, we just start at 4 AM and pour before the sun gets high.

Ever tried using ice in the mix instead?
