PSA: saw a finisher in Kansas City broom a slab with a 2x4 and it looked better than my $200 float
Was down in Kansas City helping my cousin pour a 30x40 shop pad about three weeks ago and this old boy running the crew finished the whole thing with a homemade 2x4 screed and a broom he kept in his truck since the 90s. I brought my magnesium float and my big box store trowel like I always do and honestly his edges came out cleaner than mine. He said he quit buying fancy tools after he burned through three floats in one summer back in 09 and just went back to what his dad taught him. Got me thinking about how we all chase the new stuff and forget the basics still lay flat if your mud is right. I'm not ditching my float but I did cut my screed board down a foot after that pour and it's easier to handle on small jobs. Anybody else still keep a homemade screed in the truck or am I the only one that got shown up by a 2x4?
I used to roll my eyes at guys finishing with old junk tools, figured they were just cheap or stuck in their ways. Then I watched a guy pull a screed he made from a pallet board and it cut cleaner than my store bought one because the wood had just enough give to it. Now mine hangs in the truck and I reach for it more than the fancy stuff.
