Had to pick between a magnesium float and a wood float for a hot pour on a garage slab in Phoenix. Went with the wood. It dragged a bit but didn't tear the surface like the mag would have.

That "spraying water on the wood float" trick is one I read about on a concrete forum, seemed like voodoo until I tried it on a driveway last summer. It bought me just enough time to avoid the whole tear-out mess.

Smart call going with wood out there. That Phoenix heat will set up a hot pour crazy fast, way too fast for a mag to work without sticking. You ever try spraying a little water on the wood float to help it glide? Just a trick to cut the drag without messing up the finish.

Oh man, that water trick is a lifesaver. It totally reminds me of the time my uncle tried to pour a small patio slab in July, and he didn't prep anything. The mix looked like quicksand setting up in the sun. He was out there with a metal trowel just fighting it, scraping up more than he was smoothing down. You could see the panic in his eyes. Makes you wonder how many DIY projects turn into disasters just from skipping the little tricks, right?
