Got a call back for a slab I poured in Phoenix last month

The homeowner sent me a picture of a hairline crack running right through the center of their new patio. It was a 12x16 foot pour, and I know I put the control joints in at 8 feet like you're supposed to. Turns out the ground crew had backfilled with some real sandy soil that wasn't compacted right before we poured. I had to go back, cut a new joint along the crack, and fill it with a self-leveling sealant on my own dime. What's your go-to method for checking subgrade before a pour to avoid this mess?

My uncle's patio cracked because he watered the new slab in August heat.

Yeah @derek939 it's more about when you water it than if you water it. Gotta keep it misted not soaked or you're just washing the cream off the top.

Stomp around on the subgrade like a toddler throwing a fit, that's my high-tech test lol.
