Borrowed a laser level instead of buying one, saved $300 on this job

I was stuck choosing between renting a rotary laser for $85 a day or just doing string lines on a 40 foot driveway pad in Fresno. Grabbed my buddy's green beam unit last weekend and honestly it paid for itself in layout time alone, but I still think string lines are fine for small slabs. Anyone else borrow equipment from other finishers when the price feels steep?

That green beam trick is solid, I borrowed one for a 30 foot footer and it cut my setup time in half. String lines still work, but for anything over 20 feet I’d rather ask a guy for a favor than drop the cash.
