Walked into a client's server room in Dallas, found their backup strategy is a joke

I was doing a routine check at a small law firm off I-35 last Tuesday. Their IT guy swears by a single external drive plugged into the server, no offsite copy, no rotation. I asked how many days of data they could lose if that drive dies, and he said maybe 2 weeks is fine. The other side is they only have 12 employees and a $500 budget, so is a cloud backup service like Backblaze at $6 a month really worth arguing over? Has anyone else dealt with clients who think a USB drive counts as a disaster plan?

Last spring I found a dentist office in Plano running their whole system off one NAS that had been blinking red for three months. The receptionist said her nephew built it in 2016 and it had survived a flood, so she figured it was fine. There was a smoke smell coming from the drive bay when I opened the cabinet, and they still argued about spending $30 for a second drive until the thing finally died on a Tuesday afternoon. They lost every patient file from the last four years, and the backup was a zip file on a thumb drive that had the crown logo of a bank that closed in 2019.
