The 1TB drive that had me fooled for 2 years
I was swapping out an old Seagate drive in a customer's Dell OptiPlex last week and noticed it had been running perfectly fine, no SMART alerts, all that. Decided to pull the actual power on hours just for kicks and it showed something like 51,000 hours, which is nearly 6 years of constant spin. But what really surprised me was that the drive had a 4K sector size and the customer's OS was installed with 512e alignment, so every read/write was doing double duty. I checked the partition offset in Disk Management and sure enough it was off by that exact 4K boundary. Has anyone else dealt with a misaligned partition that just sorta works until it doesnt? It ran for 2 years without complaints, but I bet the performance was secretly garbage the whole time.

Did you check the actual IOPS before and after fixing it?
