That 2015 server advice about SSD temp drives turned out to be solid

An old forum regular told me to skip the fancy enterprise SSDs and use a consumer drive for temporary scratch space on a file server in Phoenix. I thought he was crazy, but he said the workload was mostly read bursts, so wear wasn't the issue. After 14 months of constant use, that $89 drive still passes SMART tests with 98% life left. Meanwhile, the RAID array of spinning disks lost a second drive last week. Has anyone else found consumer drives fine for temp slots when the write pattern is low?
