Stop telling customers their hard drive data is gone before you even pull it
Had a walk in last Thursday at my shop here in Boise, older lady with a clicking WD Blue from 2014. The kid at the big box store told her the data was unrecoverable and sold her a new laptop on the spot. I threw it in the dock, heard the click, and knew it was a head issue, not platter damage. Sent it to a lab in Sacramento for $650 and she got 11 years of family photos back. If you are not set up for clean room work, just say that instead of guessing. How many of you have a go to lab you trust for these?
Big box stores hire kids who read from a script and their "diagnosis" is just whatever gets the sale closed. A clicking drive almost always means the heads are stuck or dead, and that's a head swap in a clean room, not a lost cause. I keep two labs on speed dial, one in Texas and one in Ohio, and I always call ahead to ask about their turnaround and no-data-no-fee policy before I ship. For anyone without a clean room, just be upfront with the customer that you're a middleman, most people respect that way more than a made up answer.
