Overheard a client say they'd just 'blow the dust out' of a server that kept shutting down

They were about to use a can of air on a unit that had been throwing thermal errors for a month. I had to stop them and explain that dust is often the symptom, not the cause, of a deeper cooling system failure. Anyone else run into customers ready to make a simple fix into a much bigger problem?

Honestly, that mindset is everywhere, isn't it? People just want the quick visual fix so they can say they handled it. It's like silencing a smoke alarm instead of looking for the fire. You see it with car owners adding oil but never fixing the leak, or just restarting a phone a hundred times instead of dealing with the actual glitch. Treating the symptom feels like action, but it just lets the real failure get worse.

Wait, have you ever seen a server actually fixed by just cleaning it? I've had units come in caked in dust but still running fine. The thermal errors usually point to a dead fan, bad heatsink contact, or cooked thermal paste. Blowing dust out of a failing system is like putting a bandaid on a broken pipe. It might look better for a second, but you're just delaying the real fix.

My old landlord tried fixing a leaky ceiling with just paint. Same energy as ignoring the real problem until it floods.
