I watched a client try to fix a fan by spraying WD-40 into the power supply.

It made me realize that the most common mistake I see isn't about complex software, it's people using the wrong tool for a simple job because they don't know the basics, like how compressed air is for dust and contact cleaner is for electronics, so what's the most basic tool misuse you've had to explain to a customer?

The one that gets me is people using a butter knife as a screwdriver. I mean, I get it, it's right there in the drawer. But you're going to strip the screw head and probably slip and hurt yourself. I had to explain to a neighbor last week that even a basic dollar store multi-bit screwdriver is safer and works ten times better. It's not just about the job, it's about creating a new problem you didn't have before.

Used to think it was fine in a pinch until I saw a friend put a gash in their cabinet door. Now I keep a cheap set in the junk drawer.
