I finally saw why flying to fix a broken server beat sitting at my desk

Last month, I had to go to a client in another state for a critical system that kept dropping. Most techs I know say you can fix almost anything from your home office with remote tools. But when I got there, I found a cooling fan jammed with dust that no software scan would ever show. That short flight saved the client from a full day of lost work.

Was it really that big of a deal to fly out? A dusty fan sounds like a simple thing that could've been found with a basic look. Just seems like a lot of effort for a small fix.

Ever tried to get a clear photo of a tiny, dark corner inside a computer case? Remote techs rely on what you show them. If the user didn't think to check the fan or point a light at it, the problem stays hidden. The real question is why the on-site person didn't spot it first.

Read an article about remote diagnostics missing hardware issues sometimes.
