Can't believe 60% is all they managed to pull after spending $200. That would have had me pulling my hair out, honestly. Glad you found a system that works with the SMART checker, I should probably look into that myself.

Went through almost the exact same thing last year. Kept hearing my backup drive clicking but just put it off until it completely died one night. Ended up paying $200 for a recovery service that pulled maybe 60% of my files. Now I just set a recurring reminder every 3 months to swap out my backup drive and check the health of my main one with that free SMART checker tool. It takes like 5 minutes total and has saved me from that panic ever since. Those little warning signs are never worth ignoring, trust me.
