ESD straps only work if you wear them right, found out at 3am

After 6 years of building PCs I discovered the crocodile clip was supposed to attach to bare metal on the case frame, not the painted side panel, when my motherboard suddenly died and a senior tech at a shop in Austin pointed at my setup and asked if I actually knew how a grounding strap works, has anyone else been doing this wrong without realizing it?

Oof, yeah, I learned that one the hard way too, clip it to the unpainted frame or it does nothing at all!
