Customer at my shop asked me to fix a 2007 laptop because 'it has her husband's photos on it'
A woman came in last Tuesday with an old Dell laptop that her late husband had used, and she wanted me to pull the photos off it. The drive was clicking bad, so I told her data recovery might run $300 to $500 and she just nodded and said do it. I spent two days with ddrescue and got about 80% of the files back, mostly stuff from 2009 to 2012. When she came to pick it up she didn't even look at the screen, she just held the laptop and cried for a minute. She paid in cash and left a $40 tip on top of the bill. Has anyone else had a job where the money wasn't really the point, and how do you handle the emotional side of this work?
