A junior tech changed my mind about thermal paste application

I argued with a kid maybe 19 years old at a repair shop in Tulsa for 20 minutes about the pea method for thermal paste. He showed me a video of his tests with a Ryzen 5 chip where spreading it thin got 3 degrees cooler on average. I thought he was just repeating YouTube stuff but the numbers were solid. Has anyone else tested different methods and seen real temp differences?
