Update: walked the old Navy pier in San Diego and only 2 of the 14 moorings still have chain that isn't stretched
Killed a couple hours there last month between jobs and noticed the last three dolphins are bolted to concrete that's spalling at the base. I do mostly inland work so I don't see saltwater wear up close, and man, it's a whole different animal. Any of you saltwater guys know if that's just normal for a pier that age, or is somebody slacking on inspection?
Its the same story everywhere, we just stop looking once something has been there long enough to feel permanent. Nobody inspects the thing that was already old when they got there, so the chain stretches, the bolts rust, the concrete pops, and it all sits until something falls off. Salt water just speeds up what neglect does anywhere, only faster and meaner. Two of fourteen still holding is not normal for any pier, that is a warning sign somebody decided to skip. Feels like the whole country runs on that same bet, that stuff built by people who are long gone will just keep holding.
