Spotted a weird current shift near the Port of Houston pilings

Working a job there last month, the pull went from nothing to strong in under a minute. My umbilical got a nasty wrap on a submerged beam I didn't see. Anyone else had a sudden surge issue in that specific area?

That sudden surge you mentioned is no joke. I was on a survey boat near the turning basin and we got spun almost ninety degrees by a weird eddy. The pilot said it happens when a big container ship is braking hard up channel.

Ever wonder if the harbor's just messing with us for fun?

The Port of Long Beach has a whole study on those hydraulic effects from ship squat. @wrenwilson, that spin you felt is the water getting pushed out from under a big ship's hull when it slows down fast. It creates a temporary low pressure zone that pulls surrounding water in. Smaller boats get caught in that inward rush, which is what makes the eddy. It's wild how much moving water a container ship actually drags with it.
