Picked up the habit of pre-dive seal checks from a colleague, and it's made my dives way safer.

That "single grain of sand" story is exactly why I do it now. I had a tiny hair stuck in my mask seal once and got a slow leak the whole dive, it was so annoying. Feels dumb until it saves you.

Seems like overkill to me...

Yeah, that's such a smart move. It takes like thirty seconds to run your hand over all the seals and check for grit or a stray hair, but that tiny bit of routine can stop a flood before it happens. I watched a guy on a boat have his mask fill up instantly because of a single grain of sand stuck in the skirt. After seeing that, I became a total convert. It's one of those things that feels obvious once you start doing it.
