Overheard a guy at the dive shop say he never checks his own o-rings anymore
I was picking up a new drysuit neck seal in Seattle last week and this older diver was telling the clerk he just lets the shop do all his o-ring checks now. I always thought that was a basic thing you had to do yourself. He said, 'After thirty years, I trust their eyes more than mine for a five-dollar part.' It made me realize I might be too stubborn about doing every single check myself. How many of you actually let the shop handle your routine gear checks?

My last DIY o-ring check ended with me finding a crack in my mask strap and completely missing the one on my pressure gauge. I spent twenty minutes with a flashlight like I was solving a crime scene. The shop guy found the real problem in under ten seconds when I finally gave up and took it in. I guess my eyes are just better at seeing what I want to see, not what's actually there.

Honestly, that guy has a point. I used to check every o-ring on my regs myself until I missed a tiny nick on my tank valve last year. The shop tech spotted it in two seconds when I brought it in for a fill. Now I let them do the full check on my main gear before a big trip. It's cheap peace of mind.
