Had to pick between the old Kirby Morgan helmet and a new lightweight shell for a job in Galveston
I took the lightweight option on a 6-week bridge inspection gig. Felt like a genius for the first 2 dives, then the comms started cutting out on dive 3. The old KM 37 is heavy as hell but that thing never fails, you know? Ended up swapping back after a week and just dealing with the neck strain. Has anyone else had trouble with those newer composite shells in real current?

comms started cutting out on dive 3" is exactly what happened to my buddy in the Gulf last summer. He told me @nathanbennett's guess was spot on, they found the mic boom was getting pinched in the swivel on his composite shell. It was a simple fix once they figured it out, but it cost him two days of downtime.

Wait, comms cut out on your third dive? That's wild. I thought those new composite shells had all the fancy wiring built in. Did they give you a reason why it happened or did they just shrug and hand you back the old helmet?

Did they check the pin connection at the yoke? I've seen those come loose from the factory and cause static. Also, make sure the mic boom isn't getting pinched in the swivel - that's a common issue on the first few dives with those shells.
