Got called out for using a surface supply hat on a 40 foot job in Galveston
I was working a pier repair job in Galveston about 8 months ago, water was maybe 35 feet, nothing crazy. I rigged up my surface supply gear like I always do because I like the comms and the steady air. One of the older guys on the crew, Dale, watched me suit up and just shook his head. He said I was overcomplicating a shallow job and that scuba would've had me in and out in half the time. I brushed it off at first, but then he pointed out I spent 25 minutes just getting my hose tended and my comms checked. By the time I hit the water, his guy on scuba had already finished two inspection points. I still like surface supply for anything past 60 feet or with a lot of welding, but I've started keeping a scuba rig on the truck for the quick shallow stuff. Dale was right and I hated hearing it. Anyone else split their gear like that depending on depth, or do you just stick with one setup no matter what?
