Got a weird echo on the comms during a bridge inspection in Tampa last Tuesday

We were checking pilings under the Howard Frankland, about 40 feet down, when my buddy's voice started coming through with this hollow, delayed sound. Turned out his mask mic had a tiny crack letting in water, and the sound was bouncing around inside his helmet before hitting the transmitter. Has anyone else run into a comms issue that sounded like a bad sci-fi movie effect?

Bad sci-fi movie effect" seems a bit dramatic for a cracked mic. That's just basic gear failure, not some spooky underwater echo chamber. Sounds like you fixed it and moved on.

Check your buddy's mic seal before every dive, that crack sneaks up on you.

That echo can mess with your head underwater.

Bad sci-fi movie effect" is exactly how I would have put it before a dive last year. We had a similar echo from a bad cable connection, and it really does sound like a ghost is on the line. It's a simple fix, but it sure feels weird when it happens.
