I used to think Batman was overrated until I read The Long Halloween this weekend
I picked up a used copy at a shop in Portland for $8 and finally got what everyone was talking about. The way the story builds across each month with different villains had me hooked after the first chapter. Has anyone else had a comic totally shift how they see a character they thought they had figured out?

Did you try to figure out the Holiday killer on your own while reading, or did you just let the story take you along for the ride? I had to flip back like three times to see if I missed clues about who it really was, but maybe I'm just bad at mysteries. The detective side of Batman is definitely what makes him different from other heroes once you see it done right like this.

You ever listen to that podcast Fatman on Batman from back in the day? Kevin Smith had a guest talk about how Long Halloween was what made them respect Batman as a detective instead of just a guy who punches clowns. I read it in college after hearing that and it totally clicked. The Holiday killer mystery is so layered, it made me go back and read all the old Detective Comics stuff.
