Heard a kid call a dollar bin book 'old garbage' and it hit me weird

I was at a con in Tulsa last Saturday and this teen walked past a box of 90s X-Men books and said that to his buddy. That was like 25 bucks worth of storylines for a buck a piece, but to him it was just dust. I think we forget that the stuff we grew up on is ancient history to new readers, and if we keep gatekeeping what's 'good' or 'classic', we push them out before they even flip a page. Anyone else notice younger fans treating older runs like homework instead of treasure, or am I just getting old?

That 90s X-Men run is a bad example for the "old garbage" take though. The Claremont stuff and Age of Apocalypse still get reprinted constantly, and Marvel keeps putting those books back out because they sell. The real issue is that kid probably never had anyone hand him X-Men 1 or the Phalanx Covenant and say "start here, this part rules." A dollar bin is actually a great place to learn that, but only if an older fan points at the right book instead of just telling him his taste is wrong.
