Appreciation post: I finally get why people collect variant covers
For years I thought buying the same comic with a different picture was silly, but last Tuesday at the shop in Milwaukee, a guy showed me his run of 'Amazing Spider-Man #300' variants and explained the artist history. Seeing them all together told a story about the book's life I never knew. Do you have a favorite variant run that actually adds to the story?

Those X-Men issues you saw, were they all from the same artist or different ones? I'm wondering if having five different artists on one book actually kills that whole "history" angle.

That's a cool story, but I'm still not sold. I saw a store trying to sell five different covers of the same X-Men issue last week, all at a big markup. It just feels like a way to get people to buy the same thing over and over. The artist history is neat, but does it really add to the story inside the book?
