Appreciation post for my LCS owner who told me to stop buying variant covers
I mean, back when I first got into collecting about 4 years ago, I was obsessed with grabbing every variant cover I could find. My local shop owner, this older guy named Rick who's been running his store in Detroit for like 30 years, flat out told me to stop. He said 'you're gonna end up with a bunch of cardboard that nobody wants to buy back and you'll be out $200 a month.' I thought he was just trying to push me toward regular issues he had more of, you know? But after I moved and tried to sell my collection last year, I found out he was totally right. Those variants were basically worth cover price at best and most shops wouldn't even take them. Has anyone else had a shop owner give you advice that seemed shady at first but ended up saving you money?

you're gonna end up with a bunch of cardboard that nobody wants to buy back" - man, that line hit me hard because I literally just moved and tried to sell my variant collection last month. I had this Venom #3 virgin variant I paid $60 for, thought it was gonna be my retirement fund. Tried to sell it at three different shops and the best offer I got was $12. The other two said they'd only take it if I donated it to their dollar bin. Rick really saved you from that misery, wish I had someone like him around when I started.
