Am I the only one who liked the pre-New 52 DC better?

I see everyone raving about how the New 52 reboot cleaned up DC's continuity, but I miss the old stuff from before 2011. Reading through my collection from like 2005-2010, the stories felt more grounded and the characters had longer arcs that actually paid off. The New 52 rushed a lot of relationships and backstories just to sell new issue #1s. Does anyone else think the old universe was better, or am I just stuck in the past?

Grant Morrison's Batman run alone had more depth than most of the New 52 Batman stuff combined. I see the same thing happening everywhere, not just comics. People want instant gratification now, shortcuts to the good stuff without earning it. Relationships, careers, even learning a skill - everyone wants the fast track. The New 52 was just corporate trying to copy that instant-on culture. That's why pre-New 52 worked better. It let things breathe and grow naturally.

Yeah "let things breathe and grow naturally" really hits it. I had a buddy who tried to learn guitar in three months because he saw some YouTube guy doing crazy solos. He bought a $2,000 guitar and gave up after six weeks when he couldn't play "Stairway" perfectly. Meanwhile I've been messing with chords for like five years and still suck, but I actually enjoy it. It's like comics or anything else - if you skip the boring parts, you never get the good parts. That whole instant-on thing just makes people feel bad about themselves because they're comparing their day one to someone else's year ten.

I mean, jesseb20's buddy with the $2,000 guitar and zero patience is basically the New 52 in human form. And @rose_hart31 calling out the instant-on culture is spot on - it's like everyone forgot that sucking at something for a couple years is the whole point. I still can't play guitar either, but at least I didn't drop two grand on a shiny reminder of my own impatience.
