Watched a kid spend $400 on a graphing calculator for a class that only uses an app now

I sat through a math lecture last Wednesday and this freshman next to me pulled out a brand new TI-84. Professor literally said "just download this free app on your phone" for all the homework. The kid looked so crushed lol. I get that some programs require them but check the syllabus first people. Why are students still dropping serious cash on these things without asking around first?

My sister's kid did this exact thing last fall with a TI-84 Plus CE that was like $130. The professor put the syllabus online a week before class and it literally said "we'll use Desmos on your phone or laptop." I always tell people to go to the department website and look at the syllabus before buying anything. Most math departments have a page that lists exactly what calculator you need if you even need one at all.
