My advisor told me to take a 8am class for 'better focus' and it was a disaster
Professor Kim said I'd retain more with an early start, but I fell asleep in every single lecture and bombed the midterm. Has anyone else had a professor give advice that totally backfired?

Some people are not morning people. Period.

Wait, is this really that big of a deal? I mean yeah it stinks that you bombed a midterm, but one bad class schedule doesn't ruin your whole academic career, right? @stone.evan is right, some people just aren't built for early mornings and that's fine.
You probably learned a lesson about knowing your own habits, which is way more useful than anything Professor Kim told you. Tons of students take afternoon classes and do just fine, so it's not like you're broken or anything. Plus, you can still bounce back from this if you talk to your advisor about switching sections or getting extra help.
Honestly, this sounds like a minor setback, not some life shattering event. Just take it as proof that you should trust yourself more next time. Move on and pick a later class next semester.
