Had a long talk with my literature professor about why I can't finish novels anymore

She said it's because I'm reading for grades instead of curiosity, and that stuck with me during office hours last Tuesday as she pointed out I hadn't asked one question about the plot all semester has anyone else felt that shift where reading becomes a chore?

Wait, did she actually say you haven't asked one question all semester? That's brutal lol. But honestly, she's probably right, once you start reading just to check boxes the magic just kinda dies. I remember being so into books in high school and then college lit classes made me hate everything I picked up. It's like my brain switched from "what happens next" to "how many pages left til I'm done".

@karenw90 100% this. I had a prof freshman year who assigned 200 pages of Faulkner a week and I went from loving reading to staring at the same paragraph for 20 minutes. That "how many pages left" switch is real and it sucks.
