Appreciation post: studying in the dorm lounge beats my room and it is not even close
I always figured my own room was the best place to study since it is quiet and I have all my stuff right there. Then last week my roommate had a friend over until midnight two nights in a row, so I grabbed my biology notes and camped out in the lounge on the second floor of Halstead Hall instead. Turns out the low hum of the vending machine and people quietly coming and going actually helped me focus more than total silence ever did. I knocked out 40 pages of reading in about 90 minutes, which normally takes me half a day in my room where I keep getting up to check my phone or grab a snack. In my room I am three feet from my bed and my Xbox, so every ten minutes my brain finds a reason to stand up. The lounge has this unspoken rule where nobody bugs you if your headphones are on, and just knowing someone could see me slacking off keeps me on task. Has anyone else switched up where they study and been surprised by what actually works? I want to know if the library beats the lounge for you or if I am missing something.
