My cousin who does IT for a living said skip tutorials and build something, so I tried and spent 9 hours stuck on a missing semicolon

When I started learning Python back in March he sat me down and said "tutorials are a trap, just pick a project and Google your way out," so I tried building a little script that renames my photos. Nine hours in I was staring at an error that turned out to be one missing quote mark, and I hadn't learned what a loop even was yet. Do people here think the project first approach works for a total beginner, or was he just telling me what worked for him after 15 years of doing this?
