I finally wrote my first real script and it broke everything

Spent all last Saturday making a Python script to rename files in my downloads folder. Took me 8 hours watching tutorials and testing on fake files. When I ran it for real it renamed my whole desktop instead. Desktop shortcuts all turned into random numbers. Had to spend Sunday rebuilding my shortcuts and googling how to undo a batch rename. Worst part is I still dont fully get what went wrong. Anyone else have a script go sideways on their first real try?

Oh man, I had a buddy who tried to organize his music library with a script. He ended up renaming his system files instead and his computer wouldn't boot. He spent a whole weekend in recovery mode with a USB stick. So yeah, you're in good company with the script gone wrong club.

Seth_green85, sounds like your buddy accidentally auditioned for a role in "The IT Crowd" but with a lot less laughter and a lot more command prompt. I mean, hey, at least his music library was safe while the system files were getting a free renaming. Maybe the real lesson here is that scripts and lazy Sunday afternoons are a dangerous combination.
