Update: I used to think coolant concentration didn't matter much as long as the pump ran.
For years I just topped off the tank with water when it got low. Then my machine started leaving a weird, sticky film on the parts and the finish went dull. A guy at a tooling supply place in Dayton asked me to check the mix with a refractometer, and it was way off. Now I check it every Monday morning without fail. What's your routine for keeping coolant in spec?

Monday morning check is the only way to go. Let it slide and you get that gunk building up in the lines. A refractometer is cheap insurance against ruining a batch of parts. I keep a log sheet right on the machine to track the numbers. Stops you from guessing and messing it up again.

Why just Monday though @alice_reed47? That gunk doesn't wait for a calendar. A quick daily look is way safer than a weekly guess. It saves more parts in the long run.
