TIL my roughing passes were starving the tool because I never checked radial engagement past the first pass
I was running a 1/2 inch carbide end mill in 4140 last week at the same stepover I've used since I started, and a guy I trained with pointed out I was rubbing more than cutting on anything past a full width pass. I pulled up the chip thinning chart on my phone at the machine and my numbers were basically half of what they should be for a 10 percent stepover, which explains why I've been burning up inserts every 40 minutes. How do you guys figure out your stepover for adaptive paths, do you run the numbers every job or just go off feel at this point?
Been there man, running the same stepover for years and wondering why inserts die so fast. Pulling up that chip thinning chart at the machine was a smart move, way better than guessing.
