That one job where the new guy crashed the machine into the vise

Last Tuesday, we had a new hire running a simple facing cut on a Haas VF2, and he must have fat-fingered the offset. The tool went straight down into the hardened steel vise jaw at full rapid, and the sound was like a gunshot. The spindle load spiked to 150% before the drive faulted out. We lost a $200 face mill, wrecked the vise, and the machine was down for the rest of the day while we checked for axis damage. The foreman just stood there rubbing his forehead for a solid minute. Anyone else have a crash story that just killed the whole shop's vibe?

Honestly, you can get so focused on the cost of the tool and the vise that you forget about the downtime ripple effect. @torres.drew, you mentioned the spindle load hitting 150% before it faulted, and that's the part that always gets me. If the axis ballscrews or guides took a hit, you're looking at a service call that could drag out the whole week while they tear it down and recertify the geometry. The foreman rubbing his forehead was probably already doing the math on that lost production time.

Oh man, that sound is the worst! We had a guy run a drill straight through a titanium part and into the tombstone last month. Snapped the tool holder right off, and the whole table jumped. The silence after was so heavy, you could feel everyone just stop breathing for a second. Boss walked over, looked at the screen, and just said "well, that's not right" in the deadest voice. Totally killed the afternoon.

That "silence after" feeling, @the_amy, is just the sound of money leaving the room.
