Spent 6 months chasing chatter before my $3 harbor freight mirror tipped me off
I was fighting chatter on a small aluminum bracket job for half a year, blaming my tool holders and even swapped the spindle. Last Tuesday I was wiping down the mill and caught a weird pattern in a cheap mirror I keep on the bench for checking setups. Turned out one of my leveling pads on the bench had sunk about 3/16 inch and the whole machine was leaning a hair. Shimmed it up with a piece of .020 shim stock and the chatter vanished. Anybody else ever find a problem that dumb after months of fighting it?
