Showerthought: A chat with the old guy at the tool crib changed how I see my job
I was grabbing a new end mill yesterday and the guy, Frank, who's been there since the 80s, asked me about a part I was running. I told him it was just another simple bracket, nothing special. He looked at the print for a second and said, 'You know, they didn't just draw this. Someone had to figure out how to hold it, where to put the holes, and why it's that shape. You're the one who makes that idea real.' That hit different. I've been running these parts for two years on that Haas VF2, just hitting cycle start. I never really thought about the person who designed it and what problem it solves. Now I look at every job ticket and try to picture what the part actually does. It makes the day less boring. Has anyone else had a simple talk that made you see your work in a new way?

Totally get that! An old timer once told me my welds were the only thing holding a guy's dream together. It sounds cheesy but it stuck with me. Makes you feel less like a robot.

It's wild how much a simple comment like that can flip a switch. You see it everywhere, like when a barista remembers your order or a teacher says they believe in you. Those little human moments are what keep the whole machine from feeling cold.

Yeah, that's the good stuff right there. Had a boss tell me something similar once, @jesse84, and it really does change how you see the work.
