My machine hit 10,000 parts on one insert and I almost framed the chip
We run a big batch of aluminum brackets on the same lathe every month, and last Tuesday the counter rolled past 10,000 parts without a single insert change. I kept waiting for the finish to go to crap or the chips to start burning, but it just kept cutting like it was day one. At lunch I pulled the insert and it still had the coating on the nose, so now I'm second guessing every time I swap tooling early. Anyone else ever get way more life out of an insert than the book says, or did I just get lucky on this batch of material?
Meanwhile my inserts usually quit right after I brag about them at the shift meeting. Ten thousand parts on one nose is not luck, that is a setup and material combo doing exactly what it should, so trust the chip and only swap when the finish tells you to. My guess is you will chase that number for months and probably never hit it again, which is just how this trade likes to keep us humble.
